WORLD July 30, 1999 VNN4401 Comment on this story Sankirtan In The Domain BY CHITTAHARI DAS SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, Jul 30 (VNN) — Last Sunday each month - Lead by Dwaipayana das & friends In the early seventies when I joined the movement the highlight of the week was 'Sunday Sankirtan at the Domain'. This parkland adjacent to the City and Botanical gardens is historically a place of freedom of speach, politics and religion. Even today people stand on soapboxes and give speeches. However, without the sankirtan which used to fill the park with crowds of people, the effect has become surreal. The six speakers I saw only had an audience of three between them. I remember a time when everyone in the park was affected by the huge sankirtan and the transendental glow it filled the park with. Every Sunday we packed the double decker bus with people inspired to know more and chant more. In this way the feast always over flowed into the street. Vaishnavas of Sydney, those people are there again in the late ninties, people eager to chant and learn about spiritual life, but we are not there. Dwaipayana and I have planned this regular monthly kirtan with the idea to build up to massive kirtans by the Olympics next September. These will be joyfull Sunday afternoons and all who feel the desire for melodious kirtan, free from dress rules etc. please come. Bring instruments of harmony (no whompers please).
