Jackie Chan Fights For Indian Cows
BY POORVA JOSHIPURA (PETA) INDIA, Oct 6 (VNN) Dear Friends:
I am writing from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the world's largest animal rights organization with over 700,000 members and offices in the U.S., U.K., Holland, Germany, Italy and now, in India. PETA recently conducted an extensive investigation into the transport and slaughter of Indian cows and other cattle and discovered hideous abuses. I am writing to ask for your immediate assistance.
Indian cattle, including babies and mother cows, are driven hundreds of miles on a death march to distant slaughterhouses in the stifling heat without food or water. Handlers deliberately twist the animals' tails and smear chili peppers into their weeping eyes when they collapse from exhaustion. These poor cattle are crammed into overcrowded lorries, where they suffocate and can not help but gouge each other with their horns. By the time they reach the slaughterhouse, some have already died of suffocation and many are injured. All of this is done illegally, of course, since Indian law prohibits slaughter of many different kinds of cattle and the Indian constitution mandates kind treatment to all of them. The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act states that no more than six cattle can be transported per lorry, however, we found that 30 to 40 are often forced to vie for standing room.
Will you please join our celebrity supporters, such as Jackie Chan, Pamela Anderson, Chrissie Hynde, Steven Seagal and Paul McCartney, and religious leaders like Sri Sankracharya, Swami Satchidananda and the Dalai Lama in working to alleviate the suffering of India's cows by writing to the Prime Minister Vajpayee, asking him to bring the amendments to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act before Parliament? If passed, these amendments will increase the penalty for animal cruelty, thereby motivating transporters to obey the law. Please write to:
