WORLD July 27, 1999 VNN4381 Comment on this story China Crack Down On Religion BY SDN CHINA, Jul 27 (VNN) — Several days ago, the Communist regime in the People's Republic of China began one of the most massive persecutions of its own citizens that has been witnessed since the crushing of peaceful student protestors in Tiananmen Square a decade ago. The object of China's totalitarian wrath today is a peaceful and immensely popular sect known as Falun Gong. A modern manifestation of the 2, 500 year old Qi Gong meditation tradition, Falun Gong is known to have close to 100 million adherents in China. Wrongly perceived as a potential threat to Communist party domination in China, the Chinese regime began arresting leaders and violently attacking members several weeks ago. In protest against such persecution, Falun Gong members staged peaceful, non-violent, silent protests in many major Chinese cities, sometimes including as many as 30, 000 people. Such peaceful questioning of their actions was the last draw for the Chinese Communist dictators. Several days ago the Communist authorities banned this religion of 100 million members, arrested thousands of its leaders, and began a systematic persecution of this religion the likes of which has not been seen since the Nazi Holocaust over 50 years ago. Correspondants from CNN, ABC News, MSNBC and many other news sources throughout the world have reported seeing plain-clothes secret police beating aged women - grabbing them by their hair and necks - and throwing them in security vans, not to be heard from again. Books, temples and sacred images of the sect are being burned. The Sanatana Dharma Network urges all who believe in religious and intellectual freedom to protest this barbaric persecution taking place in China.
