That First 'Post' Prabhupada GBC Vote

BY RSAVDEVA DAS

INDIA, Jan 6 (VNN) — Just an anecdote from 1978: Bhakti-Svarupa Damodara Maharaja met with myself and one other -- the first time we had seen him since our beloved Spiritual Father's entrance into nitya-lila. We had all lived together for many years and our affections were familial. When Bhakti-Svarupa Damodara Maharaja informed us that he was the only one to voice objections to the election of gurus, my godbrother and I looked at one another with wonder. Hadn't Srila Prabhupada appointed them?

Bhakti-Svarupa Damodara Maharaja told us that he had told the other GBC members that for five years we should weep and feel moods of separation to thicken our relationship with our Gurudeva. He said, "We should not be so anxious to replace him with ourselves."

So, at that moment, Vaisnava advice was given -- and rejected. Bhakti-Svarupa Damodara Maharaja was born into a Gaudiya Vaisnava family and was better educated than anyone else there. He gave advice that, if taken, would have maintained the proper mood of love.
