WORLD May 3, 2000 VNN5912 Comment on this story Vaishnava Child Languishes In Foster Home BY VASANTA DASA USA, May 3 (VNN) — Aniruddha languishes in foster home in Hawaii Update: April 30, 2000 - in San Francisco. While Elian Gonzalez plays happily with his father at Andrews Air Force Base, a bright young man remains in foster custody in Hilo, Hawaii. He has no access to the values, lifestyle, or diet he has been accustomed to since birth. Meanwhile, America now makes SO many concessions for people of color, native Americans, native Hawaiians, native Navajos, and many others - even an occasional Cuban national.
These indigenous peoples and tribes are ongoing beneficiaries of countless Federal, state and local programs, educational facilities, sponsored job training, discount loans, and additional entitlements. Even those imprisoned (of any clan, tribe or family) can c-h-o-o-s-e what they eat and not eat. Aniruddha, a simple innocent 8 year old boy, has been force fed meat and fish for months - completely contrary to his preferred diet, values and customs. In California, a convicted prisoner can routinely request a VEGAN menu - and get it!! California knows that it can expect a law suit otherwise. It also costs the kitchen less to cook than the meals they already prepare. Is a boy who chooses to be vegetarian - and has enjoyed the right to be so since birth - of lesser value than those described above? A hearing will be held in Hilo on Tuesday, May 9th. Your letter, for one, and any assistance, for two, will make the day. The day is drawing close to change all this. Guess who is the winner? You are. Because you are sufficiently thoughtful and generous in his moment of need, YOU will get his blessing. He is - frankly - such a bright star, so alert and so playful ... that you can't even imagine. He has SO much natural talent (especially in music) to share with all of us. If this moment passes, he could easily slip under the radar and into the abyss. For a long time. We won't get another chance for a hearing for a while. Those familiar with the glacial pace of family court / CPS dealings in Hilo suggest that as many as 2 MORE YEARS COULD PASS by before Department of Human Services will release the boy to any living relatives. 2 MORE YEARS of limited contact with the manner and lifestyle afforded any other free citizen in our country. Just because he is a minor child. THEY think they doing what is best. WE think they are neglecting this boy (history has shown so) and they are offering more of the same. That is, unless you ACT, pick up your pen and intervene. This human being is discriminated upon due to one factor only - HIS AGE. If Aniruddha was 18 he could simply get on a plane and come see me. Or - I could fly there at any time and see this boy. But, because he is not yet reached 18 Aniruddha is declared a NON-CITIZEN, a ward of the State with no rights at all! Except doing what he is told to do - and eating what he is told to eat. This has not worked out very well so far 'under their care'. He has been treated with violence, threats and bad food. I will fly from SFO to Honolulu by no later than Thursday, May 4th to meet with attorneys in Hilo and visit with Aniruddha over the weekend prior to the hearing on Tuesday, May 9th. Since I first posted this page, the site has been updated significantly. There is now a section outlining how you can really turn the tide in this mess. This section contains several very important points we can use in our favor. Time is of the essence and the 9th is approaching VERY quickly. The State is committed to keeping Aniruddha.
