View past installments,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/harmonist.us\/?s=upadesamrta+illuminations&amp;x=0&amp;y=0\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>S<\/b><b>marana and\u00a0<\/b><b>K<\/b><b>irtana<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Some\u00a0<i>acaryas\u00a0<\/i>are of the opinion that\u00a0<i>smarana\u00a0<\/i>is more important\u00a0than\u00a0<i>kirtana<\/i>, because\u00a0<i>smarana\u00a0<\/i>is exclusively connected with\u00a0consciousness, or is more concerned with the subtle part of our\u00a0existence. They feel that\u00a0<i>smarana\u00a0<\/i>is the most effective form\u00a0of\u00a0<i>sadhana<\/i>. But our Guru Maharaja, Jiva Goswami, and also\u00a0Kaviraja Goswami Prabhu laid stress on\u00a0<i>kirtana\u2014<\/i>especially for\u00a0beginners. Our Guru Maharaja clearly said that\u00a0<i>smarana<\/i>, in a\u00a0lower position, is injurious. We should take to\u00a0<i>sankirtana<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><i>kirtana-prabhave, smarana haibe<br \/>\n<\/i><i>se kale bhajana-nirjana sambhava<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Smarana\u00a0<\/i>can only occur by the power of\u00a0<i>kirtana<\/i>,\u00a0and only at that time is solitary\u00a0<i>bhajana\u00a0<\/i>possible.\u00a0(<i>Vaisnava ke?\u00a0<\/i>\u2013 19)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When one is exclusively devoted and unconscious of the\u00a0environment, then one may go on with his\u00a0<i>smarana\u00a0<\/i>within.\u00a0But this is not at all possible for the beginners. Jiva Goswami\u00a0Prabhu says,\u00a0<i>yadyapi anya bhaktih kalau kartavya tada kirtanakhy bhakti-\u00a0<\/i><i>samyojanenaiva\u2014<\/i>all other forms of\u00a0<i>sadhana\u00a0<\/i>must be\u00a0subservient to\u00a0<i>kirtana<\/i>. This is the preaching of Mahaprabhu,\u00a0because in Kali-yuga,\u00a0<i>kirtana\u00a0<\/i>has its own characteristic. If any\u00a0<i>acarya\u00a0<\/i>has stressed\u00a0<i>smarana\u00a0<\/i>anywhere then that only means that\u00a0<i>kirtana\u00a0<\/i>is relative to the material environment and\u00a0<i>smarana\u00a0<\/i>is\u00a0independent of material consideration. With this consciousness\u00a0they may have recommended that\u00a0<i>smarana\u00a0<\/i>is highest. But this is\u00a0not accepted in a general way.<\/p>\n<p>The s<i>ahajiyas\u00a0<\/i>are fond of\u00a0<i>smarana\u00a0<\/i>rather than\u00a0<i>kirtana<\/i>. They\u00a0are followers of the secluded life and in their mind they go\u00a0on with\u00a0<i>smarana<\/i>. They collect information of their age, their\u00a0identification as a particular\u00a0<i>sakhi<\/i>, and her place of attendance\u00a0in a particular\u00a0<i>lila\u00a0<\/i>under the guidance of particular\u00a0<i>sakhi<\/i>, in\u00a0a particular place in Vrindavana\u2014all these things. They are\u00a0required to go on meditating on these things with their socalled\u00a0devotion. This is the process of the s<i>ahajiyas<\/i>. But we do\u00a0not attend to that practice\u2014it is all imagination. They are not\u00a0fit for that plane. They do not have any real\u00a0<i>sambandha-jnana\u00a0<\/i>or actual knowledge of their relationship with Krishna. They only\u00a0go on with their habituated repetition of a particular mental\u00a0speculation. The stage of\u00a0<i>anartha-nivrti\u00a0<\/i>and the progress based\u00a0on that is not be accepted by them.<\/p>\n<p>That which they consider to have achieved is a mere\u00a0concoction. They are not aware of the actual facts. It is all self-deception,\u00a0but they think it to be\u00a0<i>smarana<\/i>. Gaura-kisora Dasa\u00a0Babaji Maharaja has given an example. Babaji Maharaja used\u00a0to live in a very small hut on the banks of the Ganges. Another\u00a0gentleman, imitating him, erected a similar cottage nearby and\u00a0went on imitating Babaji Maharaja\u2014doing\u00a0<i>madhukari<\/i>, sitting\u00a0and meditating, wearing his cloth in such a way, eating, not\u00a0eating, taking bath, and some days not taking bath. Then one\u00a0day Babaji Maharaja remarked, \u201cOnly by entering a labor room,\u00a0a girl does not produce a child. Many things are necessary\u00a0beforehand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, by imitating a\u00a0<i>paramahamsa<\/i>,\u00a0<i>bhajana\u00a0<\/i>cannot be\u00a0practiced. The s<i>ahajiyas\u00a0<\/i>are laboring hard externally to produce\u00a0some child, but our Guru Maharaja said that it is not an easy\u00a0thing.<\/p>\n<p><i>muktanam api siddhanam<br \/>\n<\/i><i>narayana parayanah<br \/>\n<\/i><i>su-durlabhah prasantatma<br \/>\n<\/i><i>kotisvapi mahamune<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>O great sage, among many millions that are\u00a0liberated and perfect in the knowledge of\u00a0liberation, one may actually be a devotee of\u00a0Narayana. Such devotees, who are most peaceful,\u00a0are extremely rare. (<i>Bhag.\u00a0<\/i>6.14.5)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><i>na uthiya vrksopari, tanatani phala dhari<br \/>\n<\/i><i>dusta-phala karile arjana<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you want to collect the fruits by shaking the\u00a0tree, but not by climbing the branches then you\u00a0will only get the fruits that are bad. (<i>Kalyana-kalpataru\u00a0<\/i>1.18)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>I<\/b><b>mitation is\u00a0<\/b><b>N<\/b><b>ot\u00a0<\/b><b>S<\/b><b>uccess<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Bhaktivinoda Thakura says that if one wants some fruits without\u00a0taking the labor of climbing the tree, then what sort of fruits\u00a0will he get? You have to climb the tree and then you can get the\u00a0fruit. Otherwise it is only your imagination.\u00a0<i>Suddha-sattva\u00a0<\/i>\u2013 the\u00a0plane of pure goodness means that one must have connection\u00a0with the real plane, yet there are so many planes:<\/p>\n<p><i>upajiya bade lata brahmanda bhedi jaya<br \/>\n<\/i><i>viraja brahmaloka bhedi paravyoma paya<br \/>\n<\/i><i>tabe jaya tadupari goloka-vrindavana<br \/>\n<\/i><i>krsna-carana-kalpa-vrkse kare arohana<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The creeper of devotion sprouts and begins to\u00a0grow until it penetrates the coverings of the\u00a0universe, crosses the Viraja River, passes through\u00a0the Brahmaloka until it reaches the spiritual sky.\u00a0From there, it continues to grow until it reaches\u00a0Goloka Vrindavana where it wraps around the\u00a0desire tree of Krishna\u2019s lotus feet. (<i>Cc<\/i>.\u00a0<i>Madhya\u00a0<\/i>19.154)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mahaprabhu says that when the creeper of\u00a0<i>bhakti\u00a0<\/i>rises up to\u00a0Goloka she has to cross these planes \u2013 first Bhur, Bhuvah, Svah,\u00a0Maha, Jana, Tapa, Satyaloka, and Brahmaloka. But the s<i>ahajiyas\u00a0<\/i>do not care to know what is Viraja, what is Brahmaloka and\u00a0what is the Brahmanda. They will only go to a guru, get some\u00a0<i>mantra\u00a0<\/i>and go on meditating. But at such a stage, if they\u00a0meditate on the\u00a0<i>lila\u00a0<\/i>of Radha-Govinda, then instead of Radha-\u00a0Govinda\u00a0<i>lila\u00a0<\/i>they will get entangled with the ladies and gents\u00a0of this world. They will be entangled in the domain of lust and\u00a0will have to go to hell instead of going up to Goloka. Imitation is not success\u2014imitation degrades. The mind is another thing.\u00a0The mind is not\u00a0<i>sraddha\u00a0<\/i>for\u00a0<i>sraddha\u00a0<\/i>is connected with the soul\u00a0and the mind is connected with matter. The mind is material.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore the mind cannot produce\u00a0<i>sraddha<\/i>.\u00a0<i>Sraddha\u00a0<\/i>is an\u00a0original, fundamental thing. When\u00a0<i>sraddha\u00a0<\/i>awakens, the mind\u00a0vanishes. Darkness cannot produce light \u2013 when light comes,\u00a0darkness vanishes. Similarly, when truth comes, all mental\u00a0speculation vanishes. There is subtle and gross \u2013\u00a0<i>bhumir apo\u2019nalo\u00a0<\/i><i>vayuh kham mano buddhir eva ca.\u00a0<\/i>Earth, water, fire, and air are\u00a0gross and mind, intellect, and false ego are subtle. The mind\u00a0is a product of the material potency,\u00a0<i>apara-sakti<\/i>, and the\u00a0<i>jiva\u00a0<\/i>is a product of the spiritual potency,\u00a0<i>para-sakti\u2014<\/i>the principal\u00a0potency.\u00a0<i>Mano-dharma<\/i>, mental speculation, has got nothing to\u00a0do with truth.\u00a0<i>Mano-dharma\u00a0<\/i>is drawn from the material world,\u00a0the world of misconception.\u00a0<i>Avan-manasa gocara\u2014<\/i>the mind\u00a0cannot reach to the stage of perceiving the truth proper. It is\u00a0only related to mundane things. The mind comes from the false\u00a0ego and is made up of the exploiting tendency. We have to get\u00a0relief from that. We are surrounded by such poisonous thoughts.<\/p>\n<p><i>danam sva-dharmo niyamo yamas ca<br \/>\n<\/i><i>crutam ca karmani ca sad-vratani<br \/>\n<\/i><i>sarve mano-nigraha-laksanantah<br \/>\n<\/i><em id=\"__mceDel\"><i>paro hi yogo manasah samadhih<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Giving in charity, prescribed duties, observance\u00a0of rules and regulations, hearing the scriptures,\u00a0pious activities and sacred vows \u2013 all these\u00a0are undertaken to subdue the mind. Indeed,\u00a0concentration of the mind is considered to be\u00a0the greatest type of yoga. (<i>Bhag.<\/i>11.23.45)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>All types of\u00a0<i>sadhana\u00a0<\/i>demands that the mind should be destroyed\u2014<i>mano-nigraha-laksanantah<\/i>.
