\"Haridasa<\/a>\u015ar\u012b Caitanya-carit\u0101m\u1e5bta – Antya-l\u012bl\u0101 – Chapter 3<\/strong><\/p>\n

99: After leaving his home, Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura stayed for some time in the forest of Ben\u0101pola.<\/p>\n

100: Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura constructed a cottage in a solitary forest. There he planted a tulas\u012b plant, and in front of the tulas\u012b he would chant the holy name of the Lord 300,000 times daily. He chanted throughout the entire day and night.<\/p>\n

101: For his bodily maintenance he would go to a br\u0101hma\u1e47a\u2019s house and beg some food. He was spiritually so influential that all the neighboring people worshiped him.<\/p>\n

102: A landholder named R\u0101macandra Kh\u0101n was the zamindar of that district. He was envious of Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas and was therefore a great atheist.<\/p>\n

103: Unable to tolerate that such respect was being offered to Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura, R\u0101macandra Kh\u0101n planned in various ways to dishonor him.<\/p>\n

104: By no means could he find any fault in the character of Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura. Therefore he called for local prostitutes and began a plan to discredit His Holiness.<\/p>\n

105: R\u0101macandra Kh\u0101n said to the prostitutes, \u201cThere is a mendicant named Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura. All of you devise a way to deviate him from his vows of austerity.\u201d<\/p>\n

106: Among the prostitutes, one attractive young girl was selected. \u201cI shall attract the mind of Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura,\u201d she promised, \u201cwithin three days.\u201d<\/p>\n

107: R\u0101macandra Kh\u0101n said to the prostitute, \u201cMy constable will go with you so that as soon as he sees you with Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura, immediately he will arrest him and bring both of you to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

108: The prostitute replied, \u201cFirst let me have union with him once; then the second time I shall take your constable with me to arrest him.\u201d<\/p>\n

109: At night the prostitute, after dressing herself most attractively, went to the cottage of Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura with great jubilation.<\/p>\n

110: After offering obeisances to the tulas\u012b plant, she went to the door of Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura, offered him obeisances and stood there.<\/p>\n

111: Exposing part of her body to his view, she sat down on the threshold of the door and spoke to him in very sweet words.<\/p>\n

112: \u201cMy dear \u1e6ch\u0101kura, O great preacher, great devotee, you are so beautifully built, and your youth is just beginning. Who is the woman who could control her mind after seeing you?<\/p>\n

113: \u201cI am eager to be united with you. My mind is greedy for this. If I don\u2019t obtain you, I shall not be able to keep my body and soul together.\u201d<\/p>\n

114-115: Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura replied, \u201cI shall accept you without fail, but you will have to wait until I have finished chanting my regular rounds on my beads. Until that time, please sit and listen to the chanting of the holy name. As soon as I am finished, I shall fulfill your desire.\u201d<\/p>\n

116: Hearing this, the prostitute remained sitting there while Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura chanted on his beads until the light of morning appeared.<\/p>\n

117: When she saw that it was morning, the prostitute stood up and left. Coming before R\u0101macandra Kh\u0101n, she informed him of all the news.<\/p>\n

118: \u201cToday Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura has promised to enjoy with me. Tomorrow certainly I shall have union with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

119: The next night, when the prostitute came again, Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura gave her many assurances.<\/p>\n

120: \u201cLast night you were disappointed. Please excuse my offense. I shall certainly accept you.<\/p>\n

121: \u201cPlease sit down and hear the chanting of the Hare K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a mah\u0101-mantra until my regular chanting is finished. Then your desire will surely be fulfilled.\u201d<\/p>\n

122: After offering her obeisances to the tulas\u012b plant and Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura, she sat down at the door. Hearing Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura chanting the Hare K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a mantra, she also chanted, \u201cO my Lord Hari, O my Lord Hari.\u201d<\/p>\n

123: When the night came to an end, the prostitute was restless. Seeing this, Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura spoke to her as follows.<\/p>\n

124: \u201cI have vowed to chant ten million names in a month. I have taken this vow, but now it is nearing its end.<\/p>\n

125: \u201cI thought that today I would be able to finish my performance of yaj\u00f1a, my chanting of the Hare K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a mantra. I tried my best to chant the holy name all night, but I still did not finish.<\/p>\n

126: \u201cTomorrow I will surely finish, and my vow will be fulfilled. Then it will be possible for me to enjoy with you in full freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n

127: The prostitute returned to R\u0101macandra Kh\u0101n and informed him of what had happened. The next day she came earlier, at the beginning of the evening, and stayed with Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura.<\/p>\n

128: After offering obeisances to the tulas\u012b plant and Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura, she sat down on the threshold of the room. Thus she began to hear Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura\u2019s chanting, and she also personally chanted \u201cHari, Hari,\u201d the holy name of the Lord.<\/p>\n

129: \u201cToday it will be possible for me to finish my chanting,\u201d Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura informed her. \u201cThen I shall satisfy all your desires.\u201d<\/p>\n

130: The night ended while Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura was chanting, but by his association the mind of the prostitute had changed.<\/p>\n

131: The prostitute, now purified, fell at the lotus feet of Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura and confessed that R\u0101macandra Kh\u0101n had appointed her to pollute him.<\/p>\n

132: \u201cBecause I have taken the profession of a prostitute,\u201d she said, \u201cI have performed unlimited sinful acts. My lord, be merciful to me. Deliver my fallen soul.\u201d<\/p>\n

133: Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura replied, \u201cI know everything about the conspiracy of R\u0101macandra Kh\u0101n. He is nothing but an ignorant fool. Therefore his activities do not make me feel unhappy.<\/p>\n

134: \u201cOn the very day R\u0101macandra Kh\u0101n was planning his intrigue against me, I would have left this place immediately, but because you came to me I stayed here for three days to deliver you.\u201d<\/p>\n

135: The prostitute said, \u201cKindly act as my spiritual master. Instruct me in my duty, by which I can get relief from material existence.\u201d<\/p>\n

136: Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura replied, \u201cImmediately go home and distribute to the br\u0101hma\u1e47as whatever property you have. Then come back to this room and stay here forever in K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a consciousness.<\/p>\n

137: \u201cChant the Hare K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a mantra continuously and render service to the tulas\u012b plant by watering her and offering prayers to her. In this way you will very soon get the opportunity to be sheltered at the lotus feet of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a.\u201d<\/p>\n

138: After thus instructing the prostitute about the process of chanting the Hare K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a mantra, Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura stood up and left, continuously chanting \u201cHari, Hari.\u201d<\/p>\n

139: Thereafter, the prostitute distributed to the br\u0101hma\u1e47as whatever household possessions she had, following the order of her spiritual master.<\/p>\n

140: The prostitute shaved her head clean in accordance with Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava principles and stayed in that room wearing only one cloth. Following in the footsteps of her spiritual master, she began chanting the holy name of K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a 300,000 times a day. She chanted throughout the entire day and night.<\/p>\n

141: She worshiped the tulas\u012b plant, following in the footsteps of her spiritual master. Instead of eating regularly, she chewed whatever food she received as alms, and if nothing was supplied she would fast. Thus by eating frugally and fasting she conquered her senses, and as soon as her senses were controlled, symptoms of love of Godhead appeared in her person.<\/p>\n

142: Thus the prostitute became a celebrated devotee. She became very advanced in spiritual life, and many stalwart Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas would come to see her.<\/p>\n

143: Seeing the sublime character of the prostitute, everyone was astonished. Everyone glorified the influence of Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura and offered him obeisances.<\/p>\n

144: By inducing a prostitute to disturb Harid\u0101sa \u1e6ch\u0101kura, R\u0101macandra Kh\u0101n caused a seed of offense at his lotus feet to germinate.
