yoga-\u012b\u015bvara\u2014of the master of the mystic powers; ai\u015bvarya\u2014opulence; gati\u1e25\u2014advancement; li\u1e45ga\u2014astral body; bha\u1e45ga\u1e25\u2014detachment; tu\u2014but; yogin\u0101m\u2014of the mystics; veda\u2014transcendental knowledge; upaveda\u2014knowledge in pursuance of the Veda indirectly; dharm\u0101\u1e47\u0101m\u2014of the religiosities; itih\u0101sa\u2014history; pur\u0101\u1e47ayo\u1e25\u2014of the Pur\u0101\u1e47as.<\/p>\n
TRANSLATION<\/p>\n
What are the opulences of the great mystics, and what is their ultimate realization? How does the perfect mystic become detached from the subtle astral body? What is the basic knowledge of the Vedic literatures, including the branches of history and the supplementary Pur\u0101\u1e47as?<\/strong><\/p>\n PURPORT<\/p>\n The yoge\u015bvara, or the master of mystic powers, can exhibit eight kinds of wonders of perfection by becoming smaller than the atom or lighter than a feather, getting anything and everything he desires, going anywhere and everywhere he likes, creating even a planet in the sky, etc.\u00a0There are many yoge\u015bvaras having different proficiencies in these wonderful powers, and the topmost of all of them is Lord \u015aiva. Lord \u015aiva is the greatest yog\u012b, and he can perform such wonderful things, far beyond the ordinary living beings.\u00a0The devotees of the Lord, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, do not directly practice the process of mystic powers, but, by the grace of the Lord, His devotee can defeat even a great yoge\u015bvara like Durv\u0101s\u0101 Muni, who picked a quarrel with Mah\u0101r\u0101ja Ambar\u012b\u1e63a and wanted to show the wonderful achievements of his mystic powers. Mah\u0101r\u0101ja Ambar\u012b\u1e63a was a pure devotee of the Lord, and thus without any effort on his part the Lord saved him from the wrath of Yoge\u015bvara Durv\u0101s\u0101 Muni, and the latter was obliged to beg pardon from the King. Similarly, at the time of Draupad\u012b\u2019s precarious position, when she was attacked by the Kurus who wanted to see her naked in the open assembly of the royal order, the Lord saved her from being stripped by supplying an unlimited length of sari to cover her. And Draupad\u012b knew nothing of mystic powers. Therefore the devotees are also yoge\u015bvaras by the unlimited power of the Lord, just as a child is powerful by the strength of the parents. They do not try to protect themselves by any artificial means, but are saved by the mercy of the parents.<\/p>\n Mah\u0101r\u0101ja Par\u012bk\u1e63it inquired from the learned br\u0101hma\u1e47a \u015aukadeva Gosv\u0101m\u012b about the ultimate destination of such great mystics or how they attain such extraordinary powers by their own efforts or by the grace of the Lord. He inquired also about their detachment from the subtle and gross material bodies. He inquired also about the purports of the Vedic knowledge. As stated in the Bhagavad-g\u012bt\u0101 (15.15), the whole purport of all the Vedas is to know the Supreme Personality of Godhead and thus become a transcendental loving servant of the Lord.<\/p>\n \u0101tm\u0101r\u0101mo \u2019pi yas tv asya \u0101tma-\u0101r\u0101ma\u1e25\u2014self-satisfied; api\u2014although he is; ya\u1e25\u2014one who is; tu\u2014but; asya\u2014this; loka\u2014material world; kalpasya\u2014when manifested; r\u0101dhase\u2014for the matter of helping its existence; \u015bakty\u0101\u2014potencies; yukta\u1e25\u2014being engaged; vicarati\u2014he acts; ghoray\u0101\u2014very dangerous; bhagav\u0101n\u2014His Lordship; bhava\u1e25\u2014\u015aiva.<\/p>\n TRANSLATION<\/p>\n Lord \u015aiva, the most powerful demigod, second only to Lord Vi\u1e63\u1e47u, is self-sufficient. Although he has nothing to aspire for in the material world, for the benefit of those in the material world he is always busily engaged everywhere and is accompanied by his dangerous energies like goddess K\u0101l\u012b and goddess Durg\u0101.<\/strong><\/p>\n PURPORT<\/p>\n Lord \u015aiva is known as the greatest devotee of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.\u00a0He is known as the best of all types of Vai\u1e63\u1e47avas (vai\u1e63\u1e47av\u0101n\u0101\u1e41 yath\u0101 \u015bambhu\u1e25). Consequently, Lord \u015aiva has a Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava samprad\u0101ya, the disciplic succession known as the Rudra-samprad\u0101ya. Just as there is a Brahma-samprad\u0101ya coming directly from Lord Brahm\u0101, the Rudra-samprad\u0101ya comes directly from Lord \u015aiva. Lord \u015aiva is one of the twelve great personalities, as stated in \u015ar\u012bmad-Bh\u0101gavatam (6.3.20):<\/p>\n svayambh\u016br n\u0101rada\u1e25 \u015bambhu\u1e25 These are twelve great authorities in preaching God consciousness. The name \u015aambhu means Lord \u015aiva. His disciplic succession is also known as the Vi\u1e63\u1e47usv\u0101mi-samprad\u0101ya, and the current Vi\u1e63\u1e47usv\u0101mi-samprad\u0101ya is also known as the Vallabha-samprad\u0101ya. The current Brahma-samprad\u0101ya is known as the Madhva-Gau\u1e0d\u012bya-samprad\u0101ya. Even though Lord \u015aiva appeared to preach M\u0101y\u0101v\u0101da philosophy, at the end of his pastime in the form of \u015aa\u1e45kar\u0101c\u0101rya, he preached the Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava philosophy: bhaja govinda\u1e41 bhaja govinda\u1e41 bhaja govinda\u1e41 m\u016b\u1e0dha-mate. He stressed worshiping Lord K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, or Govinda, three times in this verse and especially warned his followers that they could not possibly achieve deliverance, or mukti, simply by word jugglery and grammatical puzzles. If one is actually serious to attain mukti, he must worship Lord K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a. That is \u015ar\u012bp\u0101da \u015aa\u1e45kar\u0101c\u0101rya\u2019s last instruction. s\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e6di-sthiti-pralaya-s\u0101dhana-\u015baktir ek\u0101 Asuras try to pacify the goddess K\u0101l\u012b, or Durg\u0101, by worshiping her in material opulence, but when the asuras become too intolerable, goddess K\u0101l\u012b does not discriminate in killing them wholesale. Asuras do not know the secret of the energy of Lord \u015aiva, and they prefer to worship goddess K\u0101l\u012b or Durg\u0101 or Lord \u015aiva for material benefit. Due to their demoniac character, they are reluctant to surrender to Lord K\u1e5b\u1e63\u1e47a, as indicated by Bhagavad-g\u012bt\u0101 (7.15):<\/p>\n na m\u0101\u1e41 du\u1e63k\u1e5btino m\u016b\u1e0dh\u0101\u1e25 Lord \u015aiva\u2019s duty is very dangerous because he has to employ the energy of goddess K\u0101l\u012b (or Durg\u0101). In another popular picture the goddess K\u0101l\u012b is sometimes seen standing on the prostrate body of Lord \u015aiva, which indicates that sometimes Lord \u015aiva has to fall down flat in order to stop goddess K\u0101l\u012b from killing the asuras. Since Lord \u015aiva controls the great material energy (goddess Durg\u0101), worshipers of Lord \u015aiva attain very opulent positions within this material world. Under Lord \u015aiva\u2019s direction, a worshiper of Lord \u015aiva gets all kinds of material facilities. In contrast, a Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava, or worshiper of Lord Vi\u1e63\u1e47u, gradually becomes poorer in material possessions because Lord Vi\u1e63\u1e47u does not trick His devotees into becoming materially entangled by possessions. Lord Vi\u1e63\u1e47u gives His devotees intelligence from within, as stated in Bhagavad-g\u012bt\u0101 (10.10):<\/p>\n te\u1e63\u0101\u1e41 satata-yukt\u0101n\u0101\u1e41 \u201cTo those who are constantly devoted and worship Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me.\u201d<\/p>\n Thus Lord Vi\u1e63\u1e47u gives intelligence to His devotee so that the devotee can make progress on the path back home, back to Godhead. Since a devotee has nothing to do with any kind of material possession, he does not come under the control of goddess K\u0101l\u012b, or the goddess Durg\u0101.<\/p>\n Lord \u015aiva is also in charge of the tamo-gu\u1e47a, or the mode of ignorance in this material world. His potency, the goddess Durg\u0101, is described as keeping all living entities in the darkness of ignorance (y\u0101 dev\u012b sarva-bh\u016bte\u1e63u nidra-r\u016bpa\u1e41 sa\u1e41sthit\u0101). Both Lord Brahm\u0101 and Lord \u015aiva are incarnations of Lord Vi\u1e63\u1e47u, but Lord Brahm\u0101 is in charge of the creation whereas Lord \u015aiva is in charge of the destruction, which he carries out with the help of his material energy, goddess K\u0101l\u012b, or goddess Durg\u0101. \nHerein it is mentioned that Lord \u015aiva is always accompanied by his material energy (\u015bakty\u0101 ghoray\u0101). Material energy\u2014goddess Durg\u0101, or goddess K\u0101l\u012b\u2014is always under his control. Goddess K\u0101l\u012b and Durg\u0101 serve him by killing all the asuras, or demons. Sometimes K\u0101l\u012b becomes so infuriated that she indiscriminately kills all kinds of asuras. There is a popular picture of goddess K\u0101l\u012b in which she wears a garland composed of the heads of the asuras and holds in her left hand a captured head and in her right hand a great kha\u1e0dga, or chopper, for killing asuras. Great wars are symbolic representations of K\u0101l\u012b\u2019s devastation of the asuras and are actually conducted by the goddess K\u0101l\u012b.<\/p>\n
