EDITORIAL November 9, 1998 VNN2481 Guru Puja of Srila Prabhupada BY BHAGAVAT DAS
EDITORIAL, Nov 9 (VNN) Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisance's. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
I read the article by Hrsikesananda das with great interest. I wantedto give a little history to explain how the worship of Srila Prabhupadaevolved to a separate Guru Puja. Prior to 1974 Srila Prabhupada wasworshipped by each devotee in the temple around the time of greeting theDeities by offering a flower to His picture on the Vyasasana in theTemple room. In April or May of 1974 in Bombay after Srila Prabhupada'smorning walk when he came to greet the Deities the devotees who had notgone on the walk led by Tamal Krishna asked Srila Prabhupada to sit downon the Vyasasana. At this point Manasvi das sang Sri Guru Carana Padmaand I think Tamal Krishna offered arati.
This was the first Guru Pujaon a daily basis. We started to hold the ceremony every day in Bombayand to the best of my knowledge and memory Srila Prabhupada approved ofthe worship and it spread to other centers around the world. We offeredthis Guru Puja to Srila Prabhupada as a form of recognition of hisunique position as one of the greatest Acharyas that had ever appearedin this world and Srila Prabhupada accepted the worship in allhumility. This is a far cry from the bogus simultaneous guru puja andother forms of guru puja that have been foisted upon Srila Prabhupada'smovement for the self aggrandizement of unqualified men with huge egosin an illegal position.
The proof that Srila Prabhupada was never personally interested in thisworship and accepted it only as a way of engaging us in Krishnas serviceis revealed in a story which happened to me personally. I had cut myfoot in Bombay and I was wearing a bandage around my foot I came to GuruPuja late that morning because I had to change the dressing. As Iarrived in the old Bombay temple room there was nearly 100 devoteessinging Sri Guru Carana Padma and worshiping Srila Prabhupada. SrilaPrabhupada saw me walk in and noticed the bandage on my foot he movedforward on the large Vyasasna and called me to come near. I went to himas he requested and he asked with great love and concern on his face andin his voice "what has happened are you all right"? I replied "yesSrila Prabhupada I am all right I just cut my foot but I am all right"."Are you sure you are all right, have you seen a doctor, have you gottenmedicine"? He asked. "Yes" I replied " I have seen a doctor and appliedmedicine". Then he looked deeply into my eyes as if to touch my souland said "If you need anything just tell me and I will take care of itfor you OK". "Yes Srila Prabhupada thank you" I replied. During thatwhole time Srila Prabhupada completely ignored his worship and gave mehis complete attention. I had taken shelter of him I was in a foreigncountry under his protection and he took this responsibility seriously. When I look back on this incident I can honestly say I have never beforeand never since felt so loved in my entire life as I did at that moment.
I realize that Hrsikesananda das is just trying to give someinstructions on etiquette. However, I personally feel, and I think anytrue disciple will agree that Srila Prabhupada more than deserves ourworship on a daily basis in fact we should worship him every second ofthe day. As for unqualified gurus they should just give up their postaltogether what to speak of daily worship. I hope this short historyhelps to clarify how the daily Guru Puja of Srila Prabhupada became atradition in ISKCON.
