The BBTI-Hansadutta Debate
BY MAHAVEGAVATI DASI
EDITORIAL, Jul 3 (VNN) For the scrutiny of the assembled Vaisnavas:
Hare Krsna. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. All glories to our Guru Varga. Please accept my fallen obeisances.
I have seen the back and forth on-going argument (without even being bothered to read through all of the stuff) between Hansadutta, Bhima, Akruranath and Gupta. (Maybe there are some others who I have missed?)
Without giving any judgement as to who is "right" and who is "wrong," I think there are certain points that must be considered:
First: Srila Prabhupada did NOT want His books to be changed. (Not one "jot" or "tittle.") At least when Srila Prabhupada was ON the planet, He was there to give His authorisation to a change or not, and we KNOW there were times that Srila Prabhupada was FURIOUS when a particular change was brought to His attention which did not have His personal authorisation.
The tad vag visargo verse in the first Canto, 5th chapter of Srimad Bhagavatam applies: "Even though imperfectly composed, these verses are heard, sung, and chanted by purified men who are thoroughly honest." It is those very books, which were printed when Srila Prabhupada was on the planet with us that MADE MANY devotees. So WHY the changes are being seen as being "needed"... I think what we need to do, is to change (and purify) our consciousnesses so that we can come to understand those books and understand what is actuality is being said.
It must also be considered that Hansadutta who is now so wonderfully 'defending' Srila Prabhupada's original books, was one of the ("original") eleven "gurus" who usurped Srila Prabhupada's ISKCON movement, and didn't seem to care at that time WHAT Srila Prabhupada's books were saying.
So, has Hansadutta really had a "change of heart" or, is there something else in it for him?
And I am NOT condoning the BBTI's position either. I think ALL of the parties on both sides need to rethink things and STOP the politics. After all, if we are too much involved in politicking, name-calling, and trying to get glory for ourselves, we might miss out on the chance to attain Radha-Krsna's Lotus Feet.
The third offense against the Holy Name is to disobey the order of the Spiritual Master, and that is a very GRAVE offense.
I remain your servant,
Mahavegavati Dasi Hare Krsna
