Krsna Lifts Govardhana Hill

Vrndavana, India (VNN) - by Ramacandra das

In an unprecedented turn of events the young son of Maharaja Nanda today saved this quiet village from the wrath of Indra, King of heaven. This years harvest has been abundant and as is the custom a sacrifice to Indra was to be arranged by Nanda Maharaja.

Nanda's young son Krsna, affectionately known as Govinda had other ideas. In an astounding display of Vedic knowledge Govinda convinced his father that such a sacrifice was not necessary.

Utilizing the karma mimamsa philosophy Krsna informed his father that required rains and good weather are automatically provided upon the fulfillment of ones prescribed duties. Furthermore Krsna stated that it is the results of ones karma that bring one happiness and distress. Finally the young boy said that rainfall, being the cause of bountiful harvests, is caused by the interactions of the mode of passion.

Against such arguments Maharaja Nanda, finally relenting, arranged as per Govinda's wish a puja to Govardhana Hill instead. In a fit of jealous rage it has become known that Indra sent his samvartaka cloud to pour freezing rains, thunder and lightning and fierce winds upon the inhabitants of Vraja.

It has been told to this reporter that Govinda, acting in his role of Bhagavan Sri Krsna then picked up Govardhana Hill as if it were an umbrella and protected all the inhabitants for one week.

Witnesses tell that upon Indra's viewing of Govinda's mystic powers he immediately stopped the deluge. The clouds cleared and again the sun rose and the Vrajabasis returned to their homes in ecstasy and great affection for Govinda.

In the heavens the demigods of Siddhaloka, Gandharvaloka and Caranaloka showered flowers upon the earth with a great beating of drums and playing of tambouras.

It is known that Indra , being humbled , offered his sincere apologies and prayers to Govinda, Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but that is another story.
