After doing some research I found the following comments regarding the widely publisized story about the “400 million year old gear mechanisms“, as it appear to be a hoax.

“Image of apparent fossil found in Kamchatka peninsula and analyzed by Yuri Golubev appears to be a HOAX as no professor by the name of Yuri Golubev is listed on the St-Petersburg university website. The image appears to be that of *Laudonomphalus regularis from the Crinoids species that are marine animals that make up the class Crinoidea of the echinoderms*. In fact the same non cropped image can be found on Wikipedia, a sample that was found in France, not Russia.”

“Those aren’t gears. We find those same fossils in Indiana. They were a form of sea life, but the name escapes me right now. I am all for the rewriting of pre-history, so to speak, but false stories and allegations do nothing to help the cause.”
